Thanks, very insightful presentations. Question for Gauteng Innovation Hub speaker: The DTI initiated an Innovation Bridge portal which intend to collaborate Industry need, SMME and Funders, much what it sounds you do. Are your initiative in conjunction with this, or separate, and if separate, can’t this be joined to form a national federated hub?
SMMEs are on the rise towards economic recovery in S.A, but the lack of R&D funding and getting into the culture of sharing resources and technical expertise is still a challenge how can we address this to get to a point where we are about to establish a silicon valley ecosystem in South Africa?
Can any panelist comment on how availability of the internet, and expanded broadband could potentially participate in the digital economy??
What is the panels view on the following questions:
1- The difference between SMMEs in a rural South AFrican environment and the ones in the urban/centres centers.
2- How do we make sure that the SMMEs build a sustainable business model to survive and make a sustainable economic development impact in rural communities.
3- How do we make sure these SMMEs are aware of green technologies and be part of biodiversity protective agents in the areas they are operating?
Hi Fisseha, I think the major inconsistency between the SMMEs in rural and urbans is access to information, the ones in rural areas are highly excluded in the greater economic participation. We should work in unity ro try and uplift those in rural areas because great ideas die because of lack of support
For Pieter, Pretoria and Gauteng have a concentration of Universities and the CSIR in the Innovation space. How do we maximise on this for Gauteng’s growth? Are you seeing enough collaboration? How could this improve?
A need to intensify support of SMMEs and a bigger government programme to support township SMMEs is required.
SMMEs are key to our economic reconstruction and recovery. How do we ensure that as a country we bring in SMME in the mainstream without too much hassles of the procurement policies that tend to favor big and experienced companies?
