MINING
Hosted by Fatheela Brovko, CSIR Impact Area Manager: Mining and Mineral Resources
The mining industry in South Africa is a key contributor to the South African economy, however a year-on-year decline in the overall profitability of the industry has been observed. Challenges facing the mining industry include increased costs, decreased productivity, health and safety risks, and environmental and social issues. The industry needs to modernise to remain sustainable. Modernisation (or ‘Mining 4.0’) involves the heightened use of technologies, and changes to people and processes. This panel session will focus on research and development conducted by the CSIR in collaboration with academic institutions, facilitated by the Mandela Mining Precinct, towards modernising existing conventional narrow reef underground operations in South Africa.
